Fear of Losing Someone You Love

Apr 19, 2023 | Irrational Fear

It might be terrible just to consider missing significant occasions with someone you love. The question is, though, how much more it would hurt if they left. It’s common to experience these emotions, but it’s critical to learn coping mechanisms so you don’t become paralyzed by them.

Tamia struggles with this fear. Although she seems head over heels for her partner, the reality is that she is constantly worried about losing him. She always finds herself obsessed with spending time with him and often cancels plans with friends and family to be with him, because she’s afraid of missing life events. She often overthinks and doubts their relationship, leading to unnecessary arguments and tension between them.

If you are experiencing the same, it is important to find the root cause of this fear so you can address it and work towards a healthier balance in your relationships.

Here are the possible reasons why you feel this way:

1. Codependency:

The dread of losing a loved one is a prevalent symptom of codependency. You worry about losing your identity if they aren’t in your life, or you’ve gotten dependent on them and can’t imagine living without them.

2. Past experience or trauma:

This fear may arise if you’ve already experienced loss of some kind or a painful relationship event. It leads you to think that the trauma will characterize all of your experiences. Perhaps you had the unfortunate experience of being in a toxic relationship, or perhaps your parents’ marriage failed.

3. Insecurity:

It’s healthy to acknowledge your imperfections and entertain some self-doubt. Worry, though, kicks in when your concerns reach the point where you constantly fear losing someone you care about. Even if you are satisfied with someone, the uneasy thoughts in your head may still be too much to handle.

Worry no more! Here are some strategies to help you overcome your fear

1. Recognize your fear:

The first step to conquering your fear of losing a loved one is acknowledging it. This may make you reassess your sentiments and routines, such as avoiding social settings or causing disagreements when none exist. Sharing your concerns with a trustworthy friend or family member may assist.

2. Accept Past Losses:

If you want your present relationship to succeed, you need to put in the time and effort required to heal the wounds from your former relationships. Sometimes it takes time and effort to get back on your feet after suffering an injury. We are more likely to repeat the same unhealthy habits that contributed to the issues in our previous relationships if we don’t work through them.

3. Analyze Your Conflicts:

When one or both couples have loss anxiety, arguments may be frequent. People prefer to justify their greatest worries when they feel weak and unprotected. Do these issues make you angry? One partner lashing out first increases the likelihood of a fear-based conflict. Instead, state what you feel. Tell your partner that you’re afraid and insecure.
